Don't be afraid to question a broker or financial advisor

When your financial advisor tells you something, do you feel like you just have to accept it without question? After all, this person is an expert. You work with them specifically for their knowledge, knowing you don't have it. Should you ever question them?

Absolutely. This is your money. It's your investment. It's your future. Never be afraid to ask questions. If your advisor makes you feel like you cannot do so, it may be time to find someone else to help you with your money.

In some cases, you may just want to ask for clarification. For instance, one financial advisor had a client ask him if he had just made a particular statement, which completely caught him off guard because he had never intended to say any such thing.

In that instance, it was just a case of miscommunication. Either the client heard the person incorrectly or he actually misspoke. What happened is not as important as the fact that the client felt comfortable asking a question and seeking answers. That's the right mentality and the right way to build this relationship.

After all, if you never question anything, it comes down to complete trust. What if the investor makes a mistake that you would have caught or deliberately takes advantage of you? It happens. Staying silent when you see those red flags sets yourself up for some real financial troubles.

If this does happen to you, even when you ask all of the right questions and look for all of the red flags, you absolutely need to know what legal steps you can take.
